Selamat datang everybody
Well we are just about to leave Brunei Darussalam tomorrow night and thought we’d just have to post one more blog to correct what I wrote last time. So last blog I said that Brunei was a bit boring. Well it’s definitely now grown on us now so this blog is to correct that initial impression.
So Brunei is one of those places you have to hang around for a while to get a feel of. The capital city Bandar Seri Bagawan is like the Venice of Asia. It’s quite an amazing little city since the whole country is based around river travel.
To get around people take water taxis and across the river on the south of the main city Bandar there is a whole village built on stilts called Kampung Ayer. It’s been that way for hundreds of years and it’s a tourist attraction in its own right. We found it to be really cool walking around and looking at how people live.
We’ve also just come back from a day trip up the river to Ulu Temburong National Park where there is an amazingly high sky walk across the canopy of the forest. Brunei unlike Malaysia has protected it’s rainforest from logging so this is a pristine 500m2 rainforest that is just stunning.
The trip there though is freaky as…
Man we took narrow-arsed speed boats racing up rapids in water that was so shallow we thought we’d bottom out and crash. Man these guys weren’t cautiously driving the boats upstream… They were friggin hooning it like they were in jet boats and racing each other!
It was actually pretty fun but definitely a sphincter clenching ride.
So I don’t know if I’d come back to Brunei except in transit since it is such a small little place. But we actually really enjoyed coming here and it is genuinely a lovely place to visit for 1/2 a week to 1 week.
The people are genuinely very friendly and accommodating and there were no concerns about being ripped off which is nice.
Anyways, we’ll be back home in a couple of days and then planning for our Bigarsed Cape York trip.
